Growing up in Maine
I grew up in the tiny town of Saint Francis (population approximately 700) in the northernmost tip of Maine and just over the river from Canada. As if that were not remote enough, my parents lived on a 110 acre homestead accessed by a path through the woods off the dirt road. For added excitement, they lived without electricity, phone, running water or automobile. As you can imagine, it was very exciting to leave home and go anywhere at all, even school.
At times it was a lonely existence, but fortunately I have an older brother (Robert) and younger sister (Aniela) so we were able to while away the hours together. It was a very isolated existence but the lack of television coaxed me into becoming an avid reader.
