Northern Maine has a unique French Canadian culture. The overwhelming majority of residents are French Canadian Catholics. Many French words have made there way into the regional English dialect which was sometimes confusing because my family does not speak French.

Culinary delicacies revered in the region include fresh moose and deer meat and my particular favorite---"poutine". Poutine consists of crispy french fries smotheres in rich gravy and topped with a special kind of curd cheese. All of the restaurants (including McDonalds) on both sides of the border serve poutine. Although I have tried, we have not been able to achieve the same results at home.

Dad still lives on our 110 acres in Saint Francis. He has made many improvements to the place including a new cabin and the addition of a generator to have the luxury of electric lighting. The winters are as cold as ever and Dad will generally leave the homeplace to visit his kids in warmer regions during part of the wintertime.
